Workshop Wisdom 01 - Florian Gadsby

Ever since I helped Hiut Denim with their content and website overhaul back in 2021 we have kept chatting about getting back shooting and producing some content for them on a longer term basis.

After a few discussions of shoots, concepts and what felt authentic to the brand and myself, we came up with a series around artists and makers in their workshop spaces. What makes them unique and how they work in their space. It’s a very simple exchange, they get some jeans of their choice and I come down to their workshop for a few hours with my cameras and we chat. Sometimes simple is best.

First up in this series was my friend Florian Gadsby who I met last year on another project for Wax London. After shooting in his studio for Wax last time, I knew I needed a different approach to make it something new. More candid making and casual approach.

Coombe End

Recent work for Coombe End estate as part of their 2025 website overhaul and re-brand.

The brief was “timeless classic” and I knew I had to throw as much film at this project as I could.

I got my M6 back.

Last year my friend Alex at South West Camera Co gave my M6 a quick once over and basically confirmed my suspicions that it was in dire need of some love. Shutter speeds all running slow, 1000th was running at a slow 500th, everything was way out of tolerance, rangefinder was off. The list basically goes on. Made sense after putting about 1000+ rolls through it since 2018.

I found some time in my diary just before my busy season where I could get it across to the guys at cameraworks for a full teardown and rebuild. It was very strange not having it to hand for 2 months, it had just become a part of my every day carry. Almost like how you check your pockets for your keys and wallet before leaving the house. My M6 was that for me.

Fortunately time flew by and I really enjoyed using my Nikon f3 in the meantime. Which is arguably a better camera in every way. It just doesn’t have that feel that my M6 does ya know? Getting it back better than it’s ever been is such a luxury and Im stoked that theres still people who know how to keep these things running. Heres to another 10 years of thrashing this thing.

Heres some test shots on Fomapan 400 @ 800.

Back on it.

These last few years i’ve been busier than ever but always neglecting keeping up with social media. Its just felt all too much like a rat race and I just don’t care for that side of it like I used to.

looking back a few years, I was really good at keeping up with semi-frequent blog posts, of work, day to day photos and various things and processes I was working on. It was something id look forward to doing and it had a place online that I could look back on easily. These days I just seem to chuck out a story post with a handful of photos then let them live on my server only for me to maybe look back at them a few years later.

In my quest to snap out of that habit and get back on sharing my work, im aiming to post here at least once a week for a year.
